I think one major difference I noticed in this version is that the soundtrack / audio seem to be different, likely because it had to be ported to the PS1's hardware, rather than using the original audio like you'll see in other versions or original arcade release. I'm absolutely terrible at this series, but I've always found it to be unbelievably fun! Basically, Metal Slug X was an updated remake / fix of Metal Slug 2, on Metal Slug 3's engine IIRC. Maybe by the time Metal Slug came around they were using photoshop, but for much of the sprite-era of gaming, Deluxe Paint and an Amiga 3000 were basically industry standard tools for creating sprites across a variety of game machines.
